Choosing a care provider is a big decision, and it is normal to feel unsure where to begin. These eight questions can help you compare providers with confidence, whichever company you speak to.
1. Who will be coming into my home?
Ask how care support workers are recruited, trained and checked. All workers should have a DBS check (formerly known as a CRB check).
2. What training do they have?
Find out about induction and ongoing training, including the Care Certificate, which sets out 15 minimum standards for people new to care.
3. Will my care plan be personal to me?
A good care plan reflects your routines, preferences and goals, and is written with you and your family. Ask how often it is reviewed and how you can ask for changes.
4. How flexible is the support?
Needs change. Ask whether care can start from a small number of hours and increase later, and how quickly the provider can adjust.
5. Will I see the same faces?
Familiar carers make a big difference, especially for people who value routine. Ask how the provider matches carers to clients and what happens when a regular carer is away.
6. How do you communicate with families?
Ask who your point of contact will be, how to reach someone out of hours, and how you will be kept informed.
7. What will it cost, and how can I pay?
Ask for a clear written quote. If you receive support from your local council, ask whether the provider works with direct payments.
8. What happens if something goes wrong?
Every provider should have a clear, simple way to raise concerns and a commitment to act on them. Ask to see it before you decide.
The right provider will welcome your questions, and answer them plainly.
